FAQs Regarding the Search Committee
This FAQs document is designed to provide clear, helpful answers to common questions about the Search Committee and guide you through important details of the process. We invite you to explore these insights to better understand how things work and how you can get involved.
If you want to contact the committee with a nomination or have any questions, please email DSnominations@metrocma.org. We ask that you direct all questions to the entire group rather than contacting individual members.
A: First, while that is the case in most scenarios, the departure of the existing District Superintendent before the end of his term requires a process that instills confidence and stability in the moment. As the current Nominating Committee was wrapping up and a new committee would not be formed until District Conference elections, the formation and utilization of a Search Committee provides the opportunity to begin the required process with the National Office and keep us moving forward. According to the Church Ministries handbook, the Nominating Committee typically works within the structure of an established election cycle, vetting and presenting candidates within a limited scope and timeframe. A Search Committee, however, can engage in a wider, more deliberate search, identifying not only those who are already known to District leadership but also leaders who may not surface naturally in a nominating process. This ensures the pool of candidates is not unintentionally narrow.
Second, it adds a layer of checks and balances. A Search Committee provides a protective layer of discernment and due diligence, conducting deep interviews, reference checks, and vision alignment assessments before handing a minimum of two finalists to the Nominating Committee. Additionally, having this separate committee allows additional trusted voices from throughout the District to participate in the process prior to election.
A: In short, the Search Committee completes the required and important due diligence process, working alongside the National Office, specifically the VP of Church Ministries, to vet and interview possible candidates. Once the nominations are vetted, a minimum of two names will be provided to the Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee’s role is to make the final decision on the candidates to present to the District. Also, they will decide how and when the election will occur.
A: The District needs to maintain leadership momentum after the Superintendent’s departure. A long, open-ended process could create uncertainty or stall District initiatives, especially for our District Staff. We want to move forward with prayerful intentionality, but also with clarity and focus.
The nomination period is simply the first step — a way to gather names. Once the names are received, the name must be first approved by the VP of Church Ministries at the National Office. The deeper work of prayerful evaluation, vetting, interviews, and discernment will continue long after the window closes.
A: The Search Committee members are as follows: Alex Chang (Chair), Brian McMillan (Vice Chair), Michelle Davis (Secretary), Anna Bock, Ashley Tringale, Gary Hrynoweski, Hao Chun Chang, Pablo García, and Phil Gilmore.
